She listened to the audiobook and read it as evidence against her own cynicism: people inside corporate America are working on ethics, and there are concrete tactics for holding values in place through governance. “I found this a very hopeful book, and a much-needed balm for the despair I’ve (we’ve all?) been feeling about the corruption of society by way of unrestrained capitalism. There ARE people thinking about ethics in corporate America. There ARE (or so the author confidently describes) concrete tactics for preserving values, principles, and ethics via thoughtful corporate governance. And it DOESN’T have to be a race to the bottom, to sell the worst, cheapest, most base offering that will extract a quick buck, discarding people and communities as collateral in the processes. I have been hungering for this kind of roadmap; just to know it exists and can be / has been done. 6 years at Meta has hardened me as a cynic, and this thawed me a few degrees.
